One-on-One: Mrs. Erma Laymon, Assistant Principal

She’s worked in Metro Schools for more than 30 years, and is enjoying her fifth year at West End Middle School. Today we’re going one-on-one with Assistant Principal Mrs. Erma Laymon.
Assistant Principal Erma Laymon

Are you from Nashville?  If not, where are you from, and what lead you to Middle Tennessee?

I am originally from a small rural area called Gates, Tennessee.  This particular area is located in West Tennessee. After graduating from high school, I relocated to Middle Tennessee in order to attend college at Tennessee State University.

How long have you been working in education, and how long have you been at WEM?

I have served a total of 31 years in the Metro Nashville School System.  It is an honor to be a part of the West End Family for 4 1/2 years.

Tell us about your family, furry, or otherwise.

My husband and I have been married for 30 years.  We have one daughter, attending graduate school this year at Meharry Medical College. Our miniature Chihuahua, Tinkerbell, is our second family member.

Mrs. Laymon

Tell us about the path that led you to WEMS.

Before joining the West End Family, I was amazed of the dynamic combination of professional educators,
dedicated parents, and community members working together to create a positive learning environment. West End is a wonderful place to work and has a history of academic success based on loyalty and integrity. The unity and dedication of teachers, staff, and parents convinced me that “West is Best”.

What is one experience you have had during your tenure at WEMS that stands out above the rest?

Students are always individual success stories.  One of my  most memorable moments is receiving a card from an
8th Grade student who thanked me for support and believing in them.  The fact that my encouragement made a difference
reminds me of how important it is to motivate our students and teach them to never give up.

When you are not working, how do you enjoy spending free time?

During my spare time, I enjoy shopping, reading, and spending time with my family. Currently, I am a Doctoral Student attending Trevecca Nazarene University.

What is your favorite thing about working at WEMS?

My favorite thing about working at West End is interacting with students daily and inspiring them to achieve their best.
I feel very strongly that each and every student is capable of making academic gains when provided the appropriate tools and guidance.

What is your number one hope/goal for the students at West End for this school year?

My goal is to help ensure the academic success of every student.
