On October 18, 2016, the Board of Directors of the West End High School Alumni
Association passed a resolution establishing the Oakley Christian Memorial Fund to benefit current students at West End Middle School. Cecil Oakley Christian, Jr. attended Eakin Elementary, Cavert Junior High, and West End High School, graduating in 1954. After getting a degree in Electrical Engineering from Vanderbilt University, he returned to West, serving as a junior high teacher and assistant coach from 1959 to 1960. Oakley was in the electrical contracting business, C. O Christian & Sons, Inc., for over fifty years before his death on September 24, 2016.
Any monies raised by the Fund will be distributed by agreement between the Board of the Association and the adult members of the Christian family. Already, more than $2,000 has been raised to purchase audio-visual equipment for the school’s multimedia production program. The goal is to raise $5,000 by June 2017 so the equipment can be installed for the 2017-2018 school year.
